Frederick Winslow Taylor's Idea on "Mental Revolution"

 


In Scientific Management, Frederick Winslow Taylor defined the "Mental Revolution" as a complete, fundamental change in the psychological attitude and outlook of both workers and management toward each other and toward their mutual responsibilities.

Taylor argued that without this psychological shift, scientific management mechanisms (like time-and-motion studies, standard tools, and differential piece-rate systems) would fail.

The Core Shift: Conflict to Mutuality


Before Taylor’s framework, the relationship between management and labor was typically zero-sum:

  • The Traditional View (Antagonism): Both sides treated organizational surplus (profits) as a fixed pie. Management sought to maximize profits by keeping wages low, while workers sought higher pay while minimizing exertion, often leading to systematic soldiering (deliberately slowing down output).

  • The "Mental Revolution" (Cooperation): Taylor proposed replacing antagonism with joint focus on increasing the size of the pie rather than fighting over how to divide it. By cooperating to maximize efficiency and output, higher profits and higher wages could coexist without conflict.

Key Dimensions of the Mental Revolution


  • Shared Objective: Both parties recognize that their interests are aligned, not opposed. Maximum prosperity for the employer is directly tied to maximum prosperity for the employee.

  • Replacement of Rule of Thumb with Science: Both sides surrender arbitrary opinion, personal whims, and traditional rule-of-thumb methods in favor of scientifically established facts, optimal workflows, and exact standards.

  • Division of Responsibility: Management assumes the intellectual burden—planning, standardizing, and optimizing tasks—while workers focus on executing those scientific methods with precision and high performance.

  • Mutual Accountability: Management commits to fair, performance-linked compensation and supportive working conditions, while workers commit to eliminating deliberate restriction of output.
